In April 2017, KALEIDOSCOPE released “Le Silver. An Italian Oral History of the Nike Air Max 97” by Lodovico Pignatti Morano—a limited edition of 600 copies designed by Bureau Mirko Borsche.
Originally a report commissioned by Nike, the book tells the story of the Air Max 97 phenomenon in Italy in the late 90s and early 00s, through the voices of those who wore the shoe with the greatest obsessiveness. In doing so, it becomes a snapshot of the attitude of late ‘90s Italian urban culture.
A reflective silver shoe released by Nike in the fall of 1997, the Air Max 97 shoe sold well globally without ever accruing the strong cultural associations achieved by previous Air Max models. Except in Italy, where it was first adopted en-masse by underground scenes before being discovered by the Milanese fashion system and going on to become an unprecedented commercial success.
